Short Bio

Why Sew Workshop is a professional sewing studio that manufactures independently designed small batch and one-of-a-kind sewn product

Statement

Why Sew Workshop is an industrial sewing studio in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood that manufactures small-batch or one of a kind sewn products. We consciously cultivate a workplace culture that is flexible, sensory-friendly, and queer/trans inclusive. Our team of highly trained stitchers are paid a living wage and work competently with both knit and woven fabrics. Unlike more standard factory floors, we can accommodate non-traditional and one-of-a-kind designs, and proudly accept upcycled materials or deadstock.

Biography

Why Sew Workshop was founded in 2017 out of owner Lauren's desire for work that was meaningful, creative, but also flexible. Since then, Why Sew has grown to employ three stitchers and an operations coordinator, has manufactured thousands of items for local independent designers, and has provided a professional platform for our employees to express themselves and financially benefit by their own creativity.

Resume / CV

Why Sew has provided an entry point into manufacturing for many small independent designers. In 2020, we began manufacturing our own designs to introduce locally made sewn products that combine visual interest, high quality, thoughtful design, and responsible manufacturing.
